Kate Royal (born London, 1979) is an English lyric soprano. She attended Talbot Heath School in Bournemouth, Dorset. She later studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and then the National Opera Studio, graduating in the summer of 2004. In that same year, she won the Kathleen Ferrier Award.

Royal began to attract wider notice as an understudy for the role of Pamina in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 2004, when she replaced the lead soprano at one performance. With Glyndebourne on Tour, she has sung the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro. She has performed in recital with the pianists Graham Johnson and Roger Vignoles. In 2006 with Glyndebourne on Tour, she sang The Governess in Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw. Later the same year, she signed a recording contract with EMI Classics, and her first disc of songs and arias was released in September 2007. She dedicates 5 months per year to song recitals.

Kate Royal - Soprano
"Bailero" By Canteloube
Academy of St Martin in the fields
conducted by Edward Gardner

Kate Royal's second recording for EMI Classics is Midsummer Night, an atmospheric recital collection focusing on female characters in 20th century opera and operetta, reflecting their pain and ecstasy in love. The programme ranges from well known turn-of-the-century works by Dvořák (Song to the Moon from Rusalka) and Lehár (Vilja from The Merry Widow) to Midsummer Night, from William Alwyns opera Miss Julie. Edward Gardner conducts the English National Opera Orchestra with guest appearances by Thomas Allen, Andrew Staples and the Crouch End Festival Chorus.

Described by The Times as "in a class of her own", voices of the calibre of Kate Royal don't come along very often. She's at home in both opera and recital, has an elegant voice and a magnetic stage presence. Kate Royal is already familiar to the record buying public through her participation in Paul McCartneys award-winning Ecce Cor Meum, and also appeared on the best-selling Kings College Choir disc; Purcell Music for Queen Mary. Kate Royals debut recital is an elegant selection of songs and arias including selections from Canteloubes Chants dAuvergne, Delibess popular Chanson Espagnole from Les Filles de Cadix, arias from Stravinskys The Rakes Progress, lieder by Richard Strauss, and Rodrigos beautiful Cuatro Madrigales Amatorios. Kate Royal is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and the National Opera Studio and has wowed audiences and critics alike with her appearances at Glyndebourne, the Wigmore Hall, Edinburgh Festival and more recently the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in Thomas Adess The Tempest. She also appeared at the English National Opera in the title role of a brand new production of Monteverdis last opera, The Coronation of Poppea and is set to return to Covent Garden in January 2008 as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte.
